Managing and Protecting Wildlife Habitats and Ecological Lands
The document titled “The Wildlife Habitat and Ecological Lands Designation Amendment Regulations, 2024,” officially designated as Order in Council 205/2024, was enacted under The Wildlife Habitat Protection Act. The amendments update land designations within Saskatchewan’s regulations. These regulations aim to better protect wildlife habitats and ecological lands in the province. The most significant portion of the document includes a series of amendments made to the Appendix of The Wildlife Habitat and Ecological Lands Designation Regulations. Each amendment involves repealing existing entries and substituting them with new descriptions of land parcels within specific townships and ranges, which are critical for defining the lands designated for habitat protection under the Act.
For instance, the amendment under Item 216 specifies lands in Township 19, Range 7, west of the Second Meridian, including Legal Subdivisions 13 and 14 of Section 5, the south-west quarter of Section 26, and the south-east quarter of Section 33. The update for Item 369 pertains to lands in Township 52, Range 13, also west of the Second Meridian, and includes portions of various sections, specifically noting areas not covered by the waters of Tobin Lake, such as the south-east quarter of Section 6. Item 385 describes lands in Township 41, Range 14, focusing on several sections, including the north half of Section 3, Section 4, and the north-west quarter of Section 8. Similarly, Item 403 outlines lands in Township 42, Range 15, highlighting the north half of Section 11 and the south-east quarter of Section 20.
Item 427 covers lands in Township 54, Range 16, detailing the north half of Section 3 and the south-east quarter of Section 9. Item 572 affects lands in Township 23, Range 24, emphasizing areas covered by Last Mountain Lake. Additionally, a new entry under Item 763.1 is added for lands in Township 18, Range 3, which includes the north-west quarter of Section 19 and the west half of Section 30. The revision for Item 1007 relates to lands in Township 51, Range 11, detailing sections such as the north-east quarter of Section 1. Finally, a new entry under Item 1089.1 is included for Section 29 in Township 38, Range 14, which notably excludes certain areas owned by the Ministry of Highways, including a gravel pit and access roads.
The regulations represent Saskatchewan’s ongoing efforts to manage and protect its wildlife habitats and ecological lands. The specific changes are aimed at reflecting the province’s commitment to preserving biodiversity and ensuring that designated lands are set aside for conservation purposes. By updating the descriptions of various parcels of land, the amendments aim to provide clarity and specificity regarding which areas are subject to protection under the Wildlife Habitat Protection Act.
