On January 23, 2025, the Government of Quebec approved the Code of Ethics for dietitians, establishing the ethical duties and obligations dietitians must adhere to in their professional practice. This Code was developed in compliance with the Professional Code and includes provisions for the general and specific duties of dietitians toward the public, their patients, and their profession.

Before its approval, a draft of the Code was sent to all members of the Ordre des diététistes-nutritionnistes du Québec, allowing for review and feedback. The Code then underwent examination by the Office des professions du Québec and was submitted to the government for final approval. It outlines general obligations for dietitians, such as maintaining professional integrity, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, and avoiding any actions that could compromise the dignity of the profession or the trust between dietitians and the public. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of protecting the health and well-being of patients, promoting professional education, and conducting oneself with respect and fairness in all professional interactions.

The Code specifically forbids dietitians from engaging in unethical conduct, such as falsifying records or participating in malfeasance. It also requires dietitians to use the appropriate professional titles and to ensure that their practice does not conflict with the ethical standards of the profession. In terms of the professional relationship with patients, the Code stresses the need for dietitians to establish trust, respect patient privacy, and avoid any personal involvement that could compromise the professionalism of their interactions. Dietitians must always obtain informed consent before providing services and ensure that patients understand their right to withdraw consent at any time.

The Code also addresses the quality of professional practice. Dietitians are required to continuously update their knowledge, adhere to scientific standards, and ensure that they provide accurate, well-informed assessments and treatments. They must avoid using untested or harmful products, and they are prohibited from making false claims about their professional abilities or the efficacy of their services. The Code also mandates that dietitians maintain professional secrecy, protecting confidential information, and ensuring that any disclosures are made only when necessary for the protection of individuals or groups.

Overall, the Code of Ethics for dietitians sets forth a comprehensive framework for the ethical practice of dietetics in Quebec, focusing on integrity, respect, and the promotion of health and well-being for patients while upholding the standards of the profession.
