Spatial Referencing on Prince Edward Island

On January 24, 2023 new regulations pursuant to section 15 of the Land Survey Act were approved by the Lieutenant Governor in Council and came into force on February 4, 2023. The new regulations are the Spatial Referencing Regulations.

The Spatial Referencing Regulations define the following terms:

(a) “NAD83” means North American Datum of 1983;

(b) “CSRS” means the Canadian Spatial Reference System;

(c) “CBN” means the Canadian Base Network;

(d) “CGVD” means the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum.

The new regulations set out the Prince Edward Island Coordinate System and Vertical Reference System for the purposes of the Prince Edward Island Coordinate System. The PEI Coordinate System is the official survey and mapping reference system for the Government of Prince Edward Island (GPEI). A vertical (height) reference system can be defined by only two parameters: a point with a known elevation from which vertical differences are calculated, and the reference surface.
