Alberta Regulation 22/2023, enacted on March 8, 2023, under the Health Professions Act, delineates the restricted activities permissible for various health professions.This regulation defines the scope of practice for regulated members, ensuring that restricted activities are conducted competently and in accordance with established professional standards.

Examples of Profession-Specific Restricted Activities include:

      • Acupuncturists (Section 3): Acupuncturists are authorized to perform invasive procedures below the dermis or mucous membrane in alignment with their practice standards.
      • Chiropractors (Sections 4-5): Chiropractors may perform specific spinal manipulations, order and apply ionizing radiation, and undertake other restricted activities. Additional education or specialty training is required for advanced procedures such as needle acupuncture and bone fracture setting.
      • Combined Laboratory and X-ray Technologists (Section 6): These technologists are permitted to apply ionizing radiation in medical radiography and perform certain invasive procedures under defined conditions.
      • Dental Assistants (Section 7): Dental assistants may apply ionizing radiation and perform designated dental procedures under supervision. Advanced training enables them to undertake additional invasive tasks.
      • Dental Hygienists (Sections 8-9): Dental hygienists can perform a range of invasive procedures for oral health, prescribe certain medications, and apply ionizing radiation. Advanced training is required for activities such as nitrous oxide administration and restorative procedures.
      • Dental Technologists and Technicians (Section 10): These professionals are authorized to fit various dental and orthodontic appliances, contingent on completion of additional training.

Examples of Detailed Restricted Activities, include:

      • Chiropractors: Authorized to perform spinal manipulations and set fractures upon completion of advanced training.
      • Dental Assistants: Permitted to fit dental appliances and perform scaling following advanced training.
      • Dental Hygienists: Allowed to perform complex procedures and prescribe medications with advanced training.
      • Dental Technologists: May undertake detailed fitting procedures following additional training.

The regulation is systematically structured to define the practice scope and restrictions for each health profession, ensuring that activities are performed within the boundaries of competence and under appropriate supervision or advanced training as necessary.
